The sudden resignation of Election Commissioner Arun Goel has prompted plans to appoint two new commissioners, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to lead the selection process. Sources indicate that the appointments are expected to be finalized by March 15, aiming to fill the vacancies left by Goel and Anup Chandra Pandey.

Goel's resignation, which came just before the announcement of the Lok Sabha polls schedule, has left Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar as the sole member of the poll authority. Anup Chandra Pandey retired on February 14, further necessitating the appointment of new commissioners to maintain the functionality of the Election Commission.

The selection process will involve a search committee led by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal, which will compile panels of five names each for the two positions. Subsequently, a selection committee led by the Prime Minister, alongside other key officials, will nominate individuals for appointment as election commissioners. The President will then officially appoint the new commissioners.

Traditionally, appointments to the Election Commission have been based on government recommendations, with the most senior among them typically appointed as the Chief Election Commissioner. However, recent legislative changes have formalized this process, ensuring that appointments are made through a structured selection process.

Sources have indicated that Arun Goel's resignation may have been due to personal reasons, dispelling rumors of discord between Goel and Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar. Despite Goel's absence from critical meetings following his resignation, internal records and decisions within the Election Commission have shown no signs of dissent from Goel.

The impending appointments mark a crucial step in maintaining the integrity and functionality of the Election Commission as it prepares for the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. With the selection process underway, the Election Commission is poised to continue its vital role in upholding the democratic process in India.
