According to recent developments, the Election Commission is poised to unveil the comprehensive schedule for the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 later this week. The anticipation surrounding the announcement has heightened, with reports indicating that the Election Commission's visit to Jammu and Kashmir may play a pivotal role in determining the timing of the elections.
The Election Commission team recently conducted a thorough review of the poll preparedness in Jammu and Kashmir, assessing the feasibility of holding elections in the Union Territory. It is speculated that the Election Commission will finalize the date for the general elections following its assessment in Jammu and Kashmir.
Notably, the Supreme Court had previously instructed the central government to conduct assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir by September 30, 2024, and expedite the restoration of statehood. Against this backdrop, Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar affirmed that the Election Commission would deliberate on whether to conduct the Lok Sabha Elections and Assembly Elections concurrently or separately in Jammu and Kashmir, taking into account the prevailing security situation.
During their visit to the Union Territory, the Election Commission team engaged with various political parties, garnering feedback and suggestions. CEC Rajiv Kumar highlighted the widespread demand among political stakeholders for simultaneous assembly and Lok Sabha polls in Jammu and Kashmir.
Emphasizing the Election Commission's commitment to ensuring transparent and secure elections, Kumar underscored the implementation of stringent measures to monitor online cash transfers through wallets in Jammu and Kashmir. Additionally, provisions will be made for elderly citizens above 85 years of age and individuals with disabilities to cast their votes from home.
Furthermore, the Election Commission has obtained pertinent details from the State Bank of India (SBI) regarding electoral bonds and pledged to disseminate all relevant information promptly. The upcoming elections are expected to witness the participation of approximately 76,876 service voters, for whom special provisions will be made to facilitate ballot services.
Amid inquiries about the exclusion of the Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party from the Election Commission's meeting, CEC Rajiv Kumar clarified that the party's internal dispute necessitated its exclusion from the discussions. However, he assured that once the internal dispute within the party is resolved, they would be welcomed for consultations.
As the Election Commission navigates through various consultations and security assessments, the nation awaits the formal announcement of the Lok Sabha Elections 2024 schedule, which is anticipated to be a significant milestone in India's democratic journey. Stay tuned for further updates as the electoral process unfolds.
